The Show’s Here
Haven’t you ever seen a grown man with his underpants over
his tights? I don’t mean Superman either. No, it’s time for Westmorland &
Cumberland wrestling. This is the time if year when you can go to the Sports
days held all over the Lake District. You can
also often see them at what some term as agricultural shows. The Westmorland
Show in September is one of the best in the country. I don’t know how many
acres it takes up but it will take you all day to do it justice.
Apart from a bit of wrestling (the underpants are actually
velvet in many cases with some extremely fancy embroidery), there is a major
livestock show, “with its heart firmly in agriculture”. Sections include
cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, heavy horses, alpacas, dogs and poultry, as
well as marquees for The Women's Institute, Learning for Life, Crafts from Cumbria, local
produce Food Hall, Rural Crafts and over 350 trade stands. What’s not to like?
This year in the food tent somewhere you’ll be able to see
our very Chris O’Callaghan cooking his heart out at a demonstration of one of
his locally sourced dishes. (2.30 pm, Thursday September 13th)
I just love the atmosphere; everyone having a great time.
Hope to see you there!
Date no good? Just look at this lot coming our way soon. We
should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky.

What the Press say
"The Linthwaite House Hotel was and is a wonderful place to say. But to me it will always mean home and the place where I grew up. My parents moved to Linthwaite when I was just three years old back in 1969 and turned what was then a private house into a hotel. . That was 11 years ago.. I tried to steer clear of making comparisons. But when every way you turned you were immediately transported back 20 years to your childhood, it wasn't easy. ... But what really swung it was the genuine warmth of the welcome - right from owner Mr Bevans through to the waiters and waitresses. ... It was a wonderful place to grow up. And it still is a great place to visit. .... It's just that next time I won't wait 11 years to go back." Back to her roots Emotional, but oh so pleasant by Helen Lee, The Blackpool Gazette, April 2001.
