If your hotel was a band which one would it be?
What if music or bands were hotels? Which would your
favourites be? A Travel Inn would be muzak; the sort of nondescript crap you
hear in a lift. Bland uncomplicated and it does the job. Hiltons would be
Celine Dion. A little too brassy, brash even, a bit noisy maybe and over
familiar. Lots of noise and a few high notes which are often over done. Don't
necessarily want to go back but you often have no choice.
Then there's the Savoy.
Open to interpretation I grant you but Brian Ferry comes to mind. Been around
for ages, still looks good, can still sing too, and makes some good
arrangements.
So what about Linthwaite then? Tricky this. Of course I'd
like it to be Bob Dylan, but that isn't right. (What would the Bob Dylan hotel
be?) No, I think it would be Bon Iver, but on second thoughts I'm not sure he'd
approve. Sublime tunes, takes a while to get into but worth the journey, and
you keep going back again and again, and you (hint) recommend it a lot.
OK I'll settle for Steely Dan then. Great individual players
in the team, highly regarded by its peers, doesn't go for the hit single,
integrity over instant reward. Great production, evolving slowly but not
changing too much, and has a sense of humour.
What's yours?
What the Press say
"Linthwaite House is the dreamiest place. Perched serenely above Lake Windermere, it is a white building with black timbers that reveal its Edwardian origins." London Diplomat, November/December 2002.
